How Icing the Kidney Helps Surgeons Remove a Tumor (Video)

Kidney SurgeryPhysicians use clamps to seal off blood flow during surgeries to prevent hemorrhage and to clearly see the area they are working on.

But when clamps are in place for a long time during kidney surgery — as for complex tumors — the extended stop of blood flow can result in damage of the kidney.

Cleveland Clinic surgeons found a way around this problem by using slushy ice. Cooling the kidney with ice, inserted robotically into the patient’s abdomen, cools the kidney and allows physicians more time to complete complex procedures robotically and without large incisions.

Watch urologic surgeon Jihad Kaouk, MD, demonstrate this technique in this video.
